How to confuse your users…

There are many ways, but one that crops up quite frequently is to ask them a question in a dialog box which implies a ‘yes/no’ answer and then present them with the choice of ‘OK’ and ‘Cancel’. Arghhhh!!! Make no wonder that the user gets a bit confused….

You’d be surprised how common this is, even in software released by big firms which ought to know better. If the project team had done a bit of user-feedback gathering, perhaps based around the use of some interactive prototypes, this inconsistency would have been discovered early on and put right.

Think about your dialog boxes and either tailor your button choice to the message you present, or phrase your message to suit your buttons. It’s easy…
